Quote:
Set on a quiet tree-lined street in Brooklyn, The Unspeakable Act is an acclaimed, darkly funny film about a young girl’s unusual coming of age. Jackie Kimball is a normal 17-year-old girl – except that for as long as she can remember, she’s been in love with her older brother Matthew. The two siblings rely on each other for friendship and support, but Matthew doesn’t share his sister’s feelings. When Matthew departs for college, Jackie sets out to meet other boys, and for the first time, must contend with life on her own.

Hal Hartley – Fay Grim (2006)

29f7c043f76a2bde437fd0d52a185152

Hal Hartley’s dark comedy “Henry Fool” was an indie masterpiece that effectively and accessibly meshed Hartley’s literary influences with his specific minimalist style and some of the most memorable characters of the last decade. Now, Hartley takes the characters he created for that world and launches them into a surprisingly different direction in “Fay Grim,” a worthy follow-up and rare art house sequel.

When we last saw our antiheroes, Simon had won the Nobel Prize for his profane and controversial poetry, Henry had fled murder charges by allegedly going to Stockholm using Simon’s passport, and Fay was left with a young son after Henry had impregnated and married her seven years earlier. The handwritten, multipart opus Henry had been flouting, “The Confessions of Henry Fool,” was largely thought to be a horrible novel, literary excrement perpetuated by a vulgar man with a vivid imagination.

In “Fay Grim,” it is another seven years later and Henry’s still missing, Simon is in prison for abetting his escape and Fay is concerned that her 14-year-old son, Ned (Liam Aiken), is turning into his father. Fay is quickly dragged into a wild game of international espionage and the duality of her love-hate relationship with Henry re-emerges.

Posey gets to reprise one of her best roles, the deeply loyal Fay, whose faith drives this film. She may need a small “How to Pray” card in order to deliver a simple prayer, but she’s a strong woman, intensely protective of her family. Her love for Henry, despite the fact she is simultaneously repelled by his repugnancy and incorrigible behavior, enables her to go forward even while being completely in the dark as to what is happening around her. Hartley has described the character as a “representative well-intentioned American who is, however, ill-informed,” but Posey adds to her a stylish sexiness that makes her down-to-earth qualities even more attractive.

Action sequences accomplished with freeze-frames that look as if they were ripped from some avant-garde German fashion magazine form a stop-motion ballet, visually energizing the beautifully shot (by Sarah Cawley Cabiya) high-definition film. Askew camera angles fuel the fear, paranoia and surprisingly tense pace.

Although “Fay Grim” is clearly of a piece with his previous films, it marks new generic territory for the filmmaker. “Amateur” had aspects of the Hitchcockian thriller, but this film feels like Hartley has been handed a Bourne or a Bond movie to direct and maintained his own style and low-budget aesthetic while thoroughly enjoying and deconstructing his new toy. — L.A. Charles Lamont – Abbott and Costello Go to Mars (1953)

29f7c043f76a2bde437fd0d52a185152

They don`t really go to Mars, they go to Venus, but first they go to New Orleans. While working at a missile base, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello inadvertently launch a rocket ship with themselves aboard. After a wild ride around New York City (the Statue of Liberty ducks when the rocket heads her way), Bud and Lou land in the outskirts of New Orleans. The boys are convinced that they`ve reached Mars, and their faith in this supposition is affirmed when they come across several strangely costumed `creatures` (actually revellers at the Mardi Gras). Meanwhile, bank robbers Jack Kruschen and Horace McMahon stow away on A&C`s rocketship. When Bud and Lou return, the crooks force them to make a quick getaway into outer space. After several days of weightlessness, the four space travellers land on Venus, a planet populated by the gorgeous winners of the Miss Universe contest (including Anita Ekberg). Venusian queen Mari Blanchard falls in love with Costello, only to order him and his companions to return to earth when Lou proves to be unfaithful. Reportedly, this bizarre melange of sci-fi and slapstick was based on a story by Charles Beaumont, who received no screen credit (it`s worth noting that Beaumont`s later Queen of Outer Space boasts a remarkably similar plotline). Long considered the team`s worst film, Abbott and Costello Go to Mars (`and about time!` quipped the New York Times` TV-movie reviewer) is rather likeable in its own incoherent way. – All Movie Guide

This is a marvellous comedy especially interesting for sci-fi lovers.

NED RIFLE is the third and final chapter of Hal Hartley’s tragicomic epic begun with HENRY FOOL (1997, TIFF) and continued with FAY GRIM (2007). At once a saga concerning the Grim family of Queens and how their lives are turned upside down by the arrival of the self-proclaimed genius Henry Fool, the trilogy is also an illustration of America’s grappling with ideas, art, politics, and religion over the course of 20 years. In this swiftly paced and expansive conclusion, Henry and Fay’s son Ned sets out to find and kill his father for destroying his mother’s life. But his aims are frustrated by the troublesome, sexy and hilarious Susan, whose connection to Henry predates even his arrival in the lives of the Grim family.

Julie Dash – Daughters of the Dust [+Extras] (1991)

29f7c043f76a2bde437fd0d52a185152

A film of spellbinding visual beauty and brilliant resonant performances, Julie Dash’s Daughters of the Dust has become a landmark of independent film. With great lyricism, Daughters tells the story of a large African-American family as they prepare to move North at the dawn of the 20th Century. Using this simple tale, the film brings to life the changing values, conflicts and struggles that confront every family as they leave their homeland for the promise of a new and better future.

In addition to this emotionally charged epic drama, Daugthers of the Dust explores the unique culture of the Gullah people, descendants of slaves who live in relative isolation on the Sea Islands off the Georgia coast. As the generations struggle with the decision to leave, their rich Gullah heritage and African roots rise to the surface.

Amonst a score of extraordinary performances are Cora Lee Day as Nana, the matriarch of the Peazant clan, Alva Rogers as Eula, who has been raped by a white landowner, and Barbara-O as Yellow Mary, a woman of the world who has come home ‘ruint’ from Cuba.

Daughters of the Dust is an African-American treasure; a vitally important work by a major directing talent. ‘A film of visionary power! An unprecedented acheivement in terms of world cinema and African aesthetics.’ -Greg Tate, The Village Voice.

Quote:
The scene of the story is laid in a tranquil village in some future world, where high technology is integrated with its nostalgic scenery.
Under “the exhausted tree”, a machine is built, which supports the life of the tree.
There lives “an old craftsman” who fixes it. “The Box” made by him is rambling along the old railroad, taking the memories of the people and the events in the village in it. In his quiet life, The old craftsman is worried about The Box, saying ” I have not fulfilled his wish yet”.
Then, the monotonous and peaceful scene in the village has begun to change slowly after the old craftsman’s death – the tree fallen down, The Box broken.
The mourning for The Box, however, will open up a new prospect.
What is the wish of The Box which is now appearing ?

Quote:
Note for this film

This is a completely new kind of SF film which shows the future of our civilization profoundly and quietly but humorously, having “The Box” as the leading role.
It tells allegorically like a picture book the possibility of the peaceful co-existence of high technology and tree, a symbol of nature.
The quite unique world of this film is depicted in its simple and beautiful images, which can entirely change our images for monochrome films.
There is the future no one has ever imagined in “The Box”.

Ermanno Olmi – Torneranno i prati AKA Greenery Will Bloom Again (2014)

29f7c043f76a2bde437fd0d52a185152

The winter of 1917, the North-East front, the final clashes of the Great War. An Italian stronghold situated at 1800 metres above sea level, on the Asiago plateau, described in the novels of Mario Rigoni Stern. It’s snowing everywhere; the Austrian trenches are so close that you can hear the enemy soldiers breathing.

A hundred years since the outbreak of World War I, maestro Ermanno Olmi describes with Torneranno i prati his vision of a conflict that cost the lives of 16 million human beings, just as it was brought back to him by the memory of his father, called to arms at 19 years of age, to find himself within the bloodbath of Carso and Piave. A drama that scarred his youth and the rest of his life, just like millions of others.

Angela Schanelec – Mein langsames Leben AKA Passing Summer (2001)

29f7c043f76a2bde437fd0d52a185152

An attempt to observe life from the outside – to gain distance, to not interfere, to just observe. Two young women sitting in a café on a summer day, a family arriving at the airport, an older woman sitting alone in a train, adult children standing in front of the hospital where their father is dying. Situations found everyday, a thousand times over. But what happens when you try to depict this normality?

Quote:
A film about several persons shown in different constellations talking to each other about their inner feelings, relationship problems, future plans, and so on. As the original title (“My slow life”) indicates, it is a very slow film with hardly any action at all, more a sequence of still photographs than a movie – even the camera hardly ever moves. Rather, the camera looks for, and finds, beautiful views of silence and peace, thus reflecting what the persons shown are looking for. A very homogeneous, credible film, without any hectic or loud moments. A film for the late evening, with a glass of whisky in your hand.

In late World War II and shortly thereafter, the husband of Miranda Rostogni (Serena Grandi) is missing and presumed dead. She takes a string of lovers representing the seasons of the year: the elderly councilman Carlo (Franco Interlenghi) in Winter, young truck driver Berto (Andrea Occhipinti) in Spring, American pipeline worker Norman (Andy J. Forrest) in Summer and tavern worker Tony (Brass regular Franco Benciaroli) in the Autumn. She wildly expresses her attitude as a free spirit pursued by these four men (not to mention others), trying to decide whether to marry any of them.

Adam Curtis – Bitter Lake (2015)

Quote:
Politicians used to have the confidence to tell us stories that made sense of the chaos of world events. But now there are no big stories and politicians react randomly to every new crisis – leaving us bewildered and disorientated.

Bitter Lake is a new, adventurous and epic film by Adam Curtis that explains why the big stories that politicians tell us have become so simplified that we can’t really see the world any longer.

The narrative goes all over the world, America, Britain, Russia and Saudi Arabia – but the country at the heart of it is Afghanistan. Because Afghanistan is the place that has confronted our politicians with the terrible truth – that they cannot understand what is going on any longer.

The film reveals the forces that over the past thirty years rose up and undermined the confidence of politics to understand the world. And it shows the strange, dark role that Saudi Arabia has played in this.

But Bitter Lake is also experimental. Curtis has taken the unedited rushes of everything that the BBC has ever shot in Afghanistan – and used them in new and radical ways.

He has tried to build a different and more emotional way of depicting what really happened in Afghanistan. A counterpoint to the thin, narrow and increasingly destructive stories told by those in power today.

Philippe de Broca – Psy (1981)

29f7c043f76a2bde437fd0d52a185152

Synopsis
The cartoonist Gerard Lauzier wrote this satire of psychologists, their practice, and the whole idea of group therapy, around Marc (Patrick Dewaere), a psychologist who may need more help than he gives. Right now, Marc is living in the countryside with Colette (Anny Duperey), but not without difficulties. He plans to conduct a group therapy session at his home one week-end, something that soon unravels because of the sudden arrival of Marc’s former girlfriend and her lover. Several years ago, the lover was Marc’s trusted friend, until he not only stole Marc’s girlfriend, but also his car, and his money. The former girlfriend and former buddy, and their partner in crime are hiding out from the police, and intent on using Marc’s property until they are safe. Group therapy, Marc, and Colette will never be the same by the time the week-end is concluded…

Quote:
The therapy culture, an emerging phenomenon in France in the late 1970s, is an area which is ripe for satire, and Philipe de Broca’s comedy Psy manages to tap into this rich vein with great success. The film was based on a strip cartoon and this shows in the shallow characterisation and overly far-fetched plot developments. Nonetheless, the script is above par for a de Broca film and most of the comedy works very well.

Quote:
What makes this a memorable film, above anything else, has to be Patrick Dewaere’s astonishing performance as Marc, the psychotherapist who himself was the victim of a nervous breakdown. Here, as in virtually of his film roles, the actor is totally immersed in his character, almost overwhelmed by it – to the extent that you are genuinely worried that he himself is in the process of having a nervous breakdown. His character reminds one of John Cleese’s Basil Fawlty (both the situation and the character bear striking similarities), with the one possible exception that Marc is a much more likeable and sympathetic character.

From Criterion Collection:

Eisenstein drew on history, Russian folk narratives, and the techniques of Walt Disney to create this broadly painted epic of Russian resilience. This story of Teutonic knights vanquished by Prince Alexander Nevsky’s tactical brilliance resonated deeply with a Soviet Union concerned with the rise of Nazi Germany. Widely imitated—most notably by Laurence Olivier’s Battle of Agincourt re-creation for Henry V —the Battle on the Ice scene remains one of the most famous audio-visual experiments in film history, perfectly blending action with the rousing score of Sergei Prokofiev.

From Timeout

Eisenstein’s first project to reach completion in nearly ten years, Alexander Nevsky is widely regarded as an artistic and political disaster, despite its wide international popularity. Conceived as a kind of nationalist epic (and approved as such by Stalin), it resurrects the 13th-century hero Nevsky as an almost mythic guardian of the Russian heritage, and celebrates his victories against the Teutonic invaders; it was read as an anti-Nazi film during the war. It’s easy to see why the mixture of religiosity, caricature and bold aestheticism has pleased many of the people some of the time. It’s main interest now is that it cleared the way for the infinitely richer and more complex achievement of Ivan the Terrible.

The effervescent and charming Chiba Sachiko (Naruse’s wife at the time) plays Kimiko, the bold daughter who travels to the countryside to find her estranged father to seek his consent for her forthcoming marriage . When Kimiko discovers that her father has taken up with a young geisha and is just as difficult as ever, her journey forces her to reconsider her ideas about familial ties. The film was Naruse’s biggest success to date and one of his warmest films. WIFE, BE LIKE A ROSE! won first place in Kinema Junpo that year and became one of the exceedingly rare Naruse films to earn distribution in the US.

Quote:
The original story of amazingly greedy people with cheat, embezzle and corruption, is an original, written by Kaneto Shindo. It’s all set in this little apartment of the Maeda family. The son’s taking money from the talent agency that he’s working for. But the money’s somehow missing. Who’s taking it? Parents, who act like they’re poor, seem to be hiding something. Or is that the daughter, the writer’s mistress? Maybe the tax man, who was helping the agency to evade a tax? The singer looks like he lost so much money, too. Who’s the most greedy, clever, smart, sexy and strongest but never seems to show that and always behave gracefully?
