Robbe-Grillet’s directorial debut, which was for decades bogged down by copyright dispute and never available on home video, cropping up only at rare 35mm showings – infrequent because apparently Robbe-Grillet thought the film too ‘linear’ and not up to his standard, so he was not over-eager to revive it. A Frenchman visiting Istanbul meets a mysterious, beguiling woman. After a few days she disappears leaving him to try and retrace her steps with the help of unreliable locals. He meets and loses her again. The film won the Prix Louis Delluc in 1962 (jointly with another film by Pierre Étaix, of all people).
